WHY ENFORCE A BAD LAW?
Some argue that strengthening penalties against employers and setting up a better system for verifying a worker's work authorization would solve the problem.
This position is flawed at its core. Reinforcing employer sanctions will only push undocumented workers further underground and continue to downgrade the conditions of both immigrant and citizen workers. Employers will always find another ploy to evade sanctions such as increasing their use of subcontracting. Greater enforcement only give employers a stronger tool to hold over workers' heads, saying that workers must accept even worse conditions because of the greater risk. The best way to strengthen enforcement against employers is to repeal employer sanctions-a modern-day slave law-so all workers have equal rights and can come together to exercise those rights.
